Situated adjacent to Perkins Beach on the South Coast of WA and buffeted by the dunes to the South West, the pasture on the agricultural site has a mixture of rye grass, clover and kikuyu on acidic peaty soils. Surface water from the adjacent soaks is abundant, with the majority of the site less than 5 metres AHD, meaning groundwater resources aren’t required for irrigation.
The building from Lurie expresses a simple form as a robust yet weathered object in the landscape, with mid-toned rammed earth and vertical silvered jarrah cladding.
The naturalistic landscape design needed to consider both the coastal context of the site, as well as the grassy nature of the surrounding paddocks, and the materiality expressed in the tall elevations of the home. To that end, a rectilinear scheme was devised to pull the geometry of the house down onto the ground plane, with the intent to soften that linearity with a grassy planting scheme that borrowed from the pastoral landscape and blurred the distinction between it and the cultivated areas of the garden closer to the house.
Large granite boulders, scaled to the building, and split granite for stepping stones, together with large format concrete steppers and low, formed concrete walls for the firepit area, formed the hardscape palette. An intermingled mix of entirely native grasses, utilising more than 13 different species, made up the planting scheme, which is notable for almost entirely excluding dicotyledons.
